Colophon · About Chronicle43

An independent reading list, kept by hand.

Chronicle43 is a web directory maintained as a curator's index: a hand-edited list of websites, organised by subject, reviewed on entry, and kept current as the web changes around it. The catalogue currently holds 833 entries filed across 22 subject sections, from automotive suppliers and healthcare clinics to gaming platforms and travel outfitters.

The curatorial approach here is straightforward. When a site is submitted, a curator visits it, checks that the description is accurate and plainly worded, and decides whether the site belongs in the index. Sites that are live, honestly described, and submitted in good faith are accepted; those that are not are set aside. There is no fee to submit and no paid placement—every entry in Chronicle43 earned its position by meeting the same plain criteria.

Entries appear under a single subject section. The 22 sections reflect broad categories of online activity: they are not exhaustive taxonomies but practical filing headings, chosen to make the catalogue navigable. Sites that do not fit a named section are filed in the Open Collection, which holds the catalogue's most varied and eclectic entries.

Chronicle43 does not rank, recommend, or endorse any site in its catalogue. The index is a record of addresses, organised by subject. Each entry carries a domain, a brief description, and the section under which it is filed. Nothing more is asserted. The reader is asked to use the catalogue as a starting point and exercise their own judgement before acting on any entry.

The index is kept, not published once and left. Entries that go dark, change their terms materially, or whose descriptions prove inaccurate are removed at the next review. New submissions are accepted at any time. The Chronicle is an ongoing project, not a snapshot.
